Privacy Policy
Last updated: 5 August 2026
This policy explains what personal information Tutor Larry collects, why, and what choices you have. We keep what we collect to a minimum. Tutor Larry is operated by Laurence Adrian Seberini, a sole proprietor trading as Tutor Larry (“we”, “us”), the responsible party for your information under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
There are two ways to use Tutor Larry, and what we collect differs between them: a home account, where a parent signs up, and a school class account, where a school signs its learners up. Section 3 covers schools.
1. What we collect — home accounts
- Your details: your name and email address (you're the account holder).
- Nothing that identifies your child. We don't ask for your child's name, surname, email, ID number, age or photo. Lessons are linked only to your account.
- Learning activity: which topics were done, lesson progress and report-card results.
- Technical/usage data: basic information your browser sends (like device type and approximate region) and how the service is used, to keep it running and secure.
- Payments: if you subscribe, payment is handled by our payment provider (PayFast). We don't see or store your full card details.
2. Why we use it
- To run the service — sign you in via your private link and deliver lessons and report cards.
- To keep you informed — a short per-lesson summary during the trial, and a progress digest on paid plans. You can opt out of these any time.
- To handle billing for paid plans.
- To keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and improve it.
3. Children — and how school class accounts work
Home accounts. You sign up as the parent or legal guardian. We don't collect personal information about your child — no name or other identifying details — so the learning activity is held against your account, not your child's identity. You can withdraw consent or close the account at any time — see your rights below.
School class accounts. Where a school uses Tutor Larry with a class, the picture is different and we set it out plainly here.
- What the learner gives us: a first name, a surname (or last initial) and a PIN they choose. Nothing else — no email address, no ID number, no date of birth, no photo, no contact details.
- What we record as they work: which topics they opened, how far they got, their scores, and the answers and short pieces of writing they type into the lesson.
- Who sees it: their own teacher, through the class dashboard, and us as the operator of the service. No other learner can see another learner's work, and we don't share it with anyone outside the school.
- Who is responsible: the school decides to use Tutor Larry and decides which learners take part, so the school is the responsible party under POPIA and handles parental consent under its own policies. We act as an operator, processing that information only on the school's instruction.
- Control: the teacher can reset a learner's PIN or remove a learner from the class at any time. On the school's request we will delete a class and everything in it.
- What we never do: we don't market to learners, we don't advertise to them, we don't sell their information, and we don't use their work to train external AI models.
- How long we keep it: for as long as the class is in use, and then in line with section 6 — or sooner if the school asks us to delete it.
4. Who we share it with
We don't sell your information, and we don't use lesson transcripts to train external AI models. We use a small number of trusted service providers purely to run Tutor Larry:
- Cloudflare — hosting and security.
- Resend — sending your account and progress emails.
- PayFast — processing payments (paid plans only).
- Google — measuring our advertising (so we know which ads bring families to us).
These providers act on our instructions only. Some may process your information outside South Africa — where they do, we have written agreements in place requiring them to protect it to a standard comparable to South African law (POPIA).
5. Cookies and tracking
We use the cookies needed to run the site and a basic advertising-measurement tag from Google. We don't use intrusive cross-site advertising profiles. You can block non-essential cookies in your browser.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is active and for a reasonable period afterwards, then delete or anonymise it — unless the law requires us to keep certain records (for example, billing records) for longer.
7. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- see what we hold about you and your child,
- correct or update it,
- delete it (“the account is yours to delete”),
- export it,
- or object to / withdraw consent for a particular use.
Just email laurence@tutorlarry.com and we'll help.
8. Marketing emails
Every progress or marketing email has a one-click unsubscribe. Essential account emails (like your login link or a billing notice) will still be sent while your account is open.
9. Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect your information. No online service can promise perfect security, but we keep what we collect small on purpose to reduce risk.
10. Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. If a change is material, we'll let you know.
11. Contact and complaints
For any privacy question or request, email laurence@tutorlarry.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (South Africa) if you believe we've mishandled your information.
