How a lesson works

From learning it, to explaining it in their own words

One topic, four steps — built so understanding actually sticks, not just gets memorised.

1

Learn it

A short, guided lesson introduces the topic clearly.

2

Apply it

They label a diagram to put the idea into practice.

3

Recognise it

Quick multiple-choice questions check it landed.

4

Explain it

They write it up — or solve a problem — in their own words.

Whatever they stumble on, Close the Gaps replays just those bits — at the same level — until they've genuinely got it. A full lesson takes about 15–25 minutes.
How Tutor Larry differs from a general AI chatbot — comparison table
The question every parent asks

"Isn't this just ChatGPT?"

The honest answer: no — and the difference is the whole point.

A general chatbot will happily write your child's homework. Tutor Larry won't. It coaches them through it, refuses to hand over answers on demand, and pushes back when they ask for shortcuts. It's built to teach, not to do the work for them.

Good to know

Parent questions

What if my child doesn't engage with it?

Don't pay. The starter plan is genuinely free — no card, no auto-charge. If they don't take to it in the first 3 lessons, you've lost nothing. And on a paid plan there's no lock-in — cancel in one click, anytime, and you won't be billed again.

How is this different from just letting them use ChatGPT?

ChatGPT will write your child's homework for them. Tutor Larry won't. Each lesson is pre-built against a specific curriculum, reviewed twice for accuracy, and the tutor is locked to that lesson at runtime — it can't drift or invent. When your child asks "just tell me the answer," Tutor Larry pushes back and gives them a hint. Built specifically to teach, not to produce homework.

Which subjects and curricula?

Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History and CAT (Computer Applications Technology) — see the catalogue above for the full topic list. Designed for senior-phase high school (Grades 10–12), aligned to CAPS, IEB, A-level, IB and AP. New topics go live every month and your subscription covers them all automatically.

Tutor Larry is a learning tool — best used during the term to build understanding of a topic, not as last-week exam-paper revision. The topics we cover are the universal conceptual core that's shared across the major curricula, so a CAPS student and an IEB student working through the same topic will both get value.

What devices does it work on?

Phone, tablet, or laptop — all three. The chat-and-diagram lessons run on a phone now, and there's extra room to enjoy the diagrams on a tablet or laptop if you've got one.

Can I see what my child is learning?

Yes. During the free trial we send you a quick per-lesson summary by email so you can see what they covered and what they're working on. On paid plans you get a weekly digest by email. You can opt out any time.

Is my child's data safe?

Your email is the account-of-record — your child's data is yours to delete or export at any time. We're POPIA-compliant. We don't sell data and we don't use lesson transcripts to train external AI models.

How long does each lesson take?

About 15–25 minutes for a full lesson plus report card. Short enough that a high-schooler will actually start, long enough to genuinely cover the topic. If your child uses Close the Gaps to replay what they missed, add another 10–15 minutes — and only on the bits they got wrong.

How do I cancel?

One click from any of our emails or from your account page. No retention scripts, no "are you sure" gauntlets. You won't be billed again, and you keep access until the end of the month you've already paid for.
